Wonderful Wausau, WI Winter Specials

At the Jefferson Street Inn, winter enchantment is everywhere you look. There are outdoor adventures aplenty, with downhill skiing at Granite Peak the top of the list, plus classic winter sporting events where you can cheer on your favorites. Wausau is known for delectable dining and eclectic shopping, both of which can be discovered just steps from our boutique hotel. Make a point to plan a special night out at our City Grill restaurant too. Experience the warmth of the season with these special offerings.

Exciting Events

  • Granite Peak has a Family Festival Weekend each month during ski season. The festival package includes lodging (choose Jefferson Street Inn), lift tickets for a family of four, free rentals, horse-drawn wagon rides, children's activities, even an on-the-hill firework display and bonfire. This ancient mountain in Rib Mountain State Park has the greatest drop of any ski area in the state at 700 feet. 
  • The Leinenkugel's Classic, an adult pond hockey tournament now in its fifth year, brings hockey plans and fans to Wausau the weekend of January 15-17. It's classic hockey at its best, a 4-on-4 round robin format, with all games played on Sunnyvale Lake. Plus there's The Wausau 535 Snowmobile Championship which takes place January 23-24. This is the 12 annual for this professional snowmobile racing event featuring drivers from the Midwest and Canada. Funds raised go to support local families with critically ill children. 
  • Badger State Winter Games open Dec. 5 with curling competition and run through Jan. 30, 2016. This iconic event gives amateur athletes a chance to compete in the style of the Olympic Games. Watch alpine and Nordic skiing, figure skating, curling, and fat tire bike racing.
  • Wausau Winter Fest, Jan. 30, 2016, takes place in the 400 Block directly across from Jefferson Street Inn. They'll be ice skating, a snow slide, ice carving, horse-drawn wagon rides, even a mac-n-cheese contest. The Winter Brew Fest follows that evening.

Dining

  • City Grill, on the lobby level of the Jefferson Street Inn, specializes in American cuisine. It's a hip spot for lunch and a wonderful place for holiday dining with friends and family.
  • Back When Café serves incredible farm-to-table cuisine in an atmosphere that blends olds and new in a most eclectic way. Enjoy a glass of fine wine while you're there.
  • Michael's offers a quintessential Wisconsin supper club experience, with a prime selection of steaks and fresh seafood plus irresistible desserts.
  • The Mint Café, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, is known for its homemade muffins in the morning, gourmet sandwiches at lunch, and hearty meals at dinner.

Shopping

  • Evolutions in Design is a must-shop at the holidays, with its stunning displays of flowers, plants, art, home décor items and the work of local artisans.
  • Janke Book Store is Wisconsin's oldest bookstore, established in 1874 and considered an institution in Wausau. This independent shop also carries games, puzzles and art supplies.
  • Shepherd & Shaller Sporting Goods is for anyone who loves being active and outdoors, with clothing, shoes, accessories and gear for summer and winter sports.
  • Sweets on 3rd in Wausau's historic river district is a European-style chocolate shop with sweets to satisfy all chocolate cravings, including hand-crafted truffles, specialty chocolate bars, even hot chocolate mixes.
