Winter 2017 Vacation Goals: Wausau, Wisconsin

Little adventures are a wonderful way to gleefully jump into winter, especially in Wisconsin.  If you've not yet visited the Jefferson Street Inn during snow season, here are lots of ideas for things to do and see in Wausau, plus some insider shopping and restaurant finds straight from our staff.     

Snow and Ice Are Very Nice

Skiing is tops at Granite Peak in Rib Mountain State Park. Did you know: It has the greatest drop of any ski area in the state, at 700 feet. Its 75 runs and three high speed lifts will keep you moving.
Cross country ski at Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area, with 20 miles of trails, some even lit for nighttime skiing. Trail difficulty ranges from beginner to challenging, making this attractive to skiers of all abilities.
Try a luminary-lit snowshoe walk at Monk Botanical Gardens.
There's something so heartwarming about seeing skaters gliding across the ice at the rink on the 400 Block. There's also open skating inside at Marathon Park.
The Wausau Curling Center, described as the finest in the world, hosts annual bonspiels. Don't know what a bonspiel is? Here's your chance to find out!
Nearly 900 miles of snowmobile trails in Marathon County are maintained by 30 snowmobile clubs. Can you tell we love snowmobiling here?
No skills required, just a penchant for fun, when snow tubing at Sylvan Hill Park.
Insider Favorite: Shepherd & Shaller Sporting Goods has an amazing selection of sports equipment for the serious athlete, including downhill and cross country skis, snowboards, snowshoes, and skates, plus rentals. The clothing selection is outstanding as well.

Warm Up with Classic Cuisine

City Grill Bistro spent weeks perfecting its winter drink and dining menu and we think they've outdone themselves this year. Enjoy live music on Saturday evenings starting at 8 p.m.This restaurant is a favorite of the locals and is located directly off the lobby of Jefferson Street Inn.
Michael's Supper Club at Rib Mountain is classic fine dining with choice steaks and seafood on the menu. They also serve a Friday Fish Fry, a Wisconsin tradition.
Insider Favorite: Patina Coffeehouse is new within the past year and they're dedicated to organic, from the dairy in your coffee to the flavor syrups in your specialty drink. Treat yourself to a scone while you're there.

Evolutions in Design is a winter wonderland this time of year, making it a magical must-shop for artful home décor treasures and sophisticated gifts.

Janke Book Store is Wisconsin's oldest bookseller, established in 1874. Make it a tradition to visit this literary mecca each time you're in Wausau to add to your collection of Wisconsin books, cookbooks and bestsellers, plus children's books, games and puzzles.

Isaac's Fine Apparel is known for its chic apparel and collection of beautiful accessories, all designed to make you feel like a million bucks. For men, Campbell Hanies Menswear offers the finest names in suits, sportswear and formal wear.

Stoned & Wired Bead Shop  offers a dazzling selection of beads, embellishments and supplies. If you're not a jewelry maker but love handmade jewelry, then you'll love shopping the array of custom pieces here.

Katzenbarkers is a pet's best friend. Stock up on treats, toys and collars for the four-legged member of the family.

Black Purl was founded in 1995, so you might say this full-service knitting store was one of the leaders in the knitting resurgence in the state. Here you'll find custom designed patterns and a wide variety of specialty yarns and knitting accessories. 

The Lamplighter Fine Gifts, a family-owned shop located in the downtown River District since 1983, is always sparkling with Waterford Crystal, Kosta Boda glassware, and Mariposa serveware, and always laden with Lladro porcelain figurines and Kit Heath jewelry.  

Second Peek Boutique is Wausau's finest consignment shop, exclusively featuring designer-label women's apparel, handbags, shoes and accessories, plus original artwork, jewelry and French milled soaps. Located in the north wing of Washington Square, making it a convenient shopping spot for Jefferson Street Inn guests.  

Insider Favorite:  If you're looking for an art piece with a story that's also one-of-a-kind, shop the work of 75 local and regional artists at the Center for Visual Arts gift shop. Added bonus - it's right in our hotel complex. Make time to visit the galleries too. 

Cheeriest Events of the Season

January 28: The 5th annual Winter Fest serves up a full day of free activities for the whole family. Picture horse-drawn carriage rides, a snow slide, ice skating, and ice sculptures throughout the downtown.
January 13-15: Leinenkugel's Classic Adult Pond Hockey Tournament features 4-on-4 teams competing for ice honors, with all proceeds going to the local youth hockey program.
January 28-29: The Wausau 525 Snowmobile Championship, a professional snowmobile racing event that draws drivers from the Midwest and Canada, supports local families with critically ill children and other charities.
Insider Favorite: The Leigh YawkeyWoodson Art Museum is such a treasure for this community. December 3 through February 26, see both the Tiffany Glass and the Art Nouveau Glass exhibits. Simply stunning!
