This central Wisconsin city offers an inviting culture of opposites. For outdoor enthusiasts there's downhill skiing at Granite Peak, snowmobiling, kayaking the Wisconsin River, and tons of hiking and biking. Wausau is also home to one of only two urban whitewater canoe and kayak competition race courses in the country.
For artsy types, must-experience stops include the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Yawkey House Museum on the National Register of Historic Places, live performances at the Grand Theater, and open-air concerts on the city square known as the 400 Block.
Add in boutique shopping, eclectic dining and a vibrant nightlife, and it's a compelling picture indeed.
